Fashion Week: Spotlight on Honor

Walk into the Meatpacking District boutique Honor and you’ll immediately take note of the luxurious essence the designer conveys.

Vibrant, detailed pieces of womenswear are displayed like art around a shop filled with plush seating and vintage accents. An elegant library stocked with art books is even tucked away downstairs.

Honor designer Giovanna Randall is taking that aesthetic one step further for spring 2012 with her third collection, which will go down a Lincoln Center runway for the first time this season.

“I’m working more on more difficult construction this time around, so there are going to be a lot more details when you look up close,” Randall said. “I’m trying to challenge myself.”

For spring, Randall drew inspiration from something affecting her everyday life: renovating her Manhattan apartment and tirelessly going through her belongings with her husband.

“I started thinking about a woman who has become her stuff and melds into her couch,” said Randall, who noted that the collection — like her previous two — is filled with feminine styles.

Honor’s pieces are made in the Garment District — a conscious choice on the designer’s part, because “I always wanted to have a positive influence on the world and the economy.”

Case in point: Though she has been designing clothing since an early age — her first garment was a dress for an imaginary fairy— Randall was once a pre-med student with dreams of joining Doctors Without Borders. However, instead of going the doctor route, she followed her passion for design, heading to FIT and then entering the fashion biz.

“All of our clothes are made here in the city, and that’s something I’m really proud of,” Randall said. “I want to do something that’s good for the rest of the world — not just fashion.”
