Firefighters rescued an elderly couple from a raging apartment fire in Brooklyn that started from some bad wiring behind a couch.

The blaze in the fifth-floor apartment started shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters scaled a ladder and went in through the window to rescue a 71-year-old man.

Other crews coming up from below found the 67-year-old woman. Both suffered smoke inhalation and the man had some burns. Authorities said the woman was in cardiac arrest when emergency medical services arrived, but they were able to revive her.

The couple was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Officials said there were no working smoke detectors in the apartment.
