Feds: Indictment in 2000 slay, attempted murder of U.S. embassy workers

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn on Wednesday unsealed an indictment of a Malian national for the murder and attempted murder of two U.S. embassy employees in Niger in 2000.

Alhassane Ould Mohamed, 42, who is at large, was accused of killing diplomat William Bultemeier and wounding Marine Sgt. Christopher McNeely during a carjacking of an embassy vehicle outside a restaurant in Niamey, the capital city.

Mohamed, also known as Cheibani, was arrested in Mali in 2000, escaped in 2002, was arrested again and imprisoned in Niger in 2010 in the murder of four Saudi nationals, and escaped again in June of this year, according to an FBI wanted circular.

The wanted poster and the indictment do not connect him to terrorism.

The FBI has offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to his capture. Officials had no explanation as to why it took 13 years to indict him in the killing of an American, or why action was taken now.
