Fees to increase for NYC Marathon runners

You'll have to work a little harder to run in the New York City Marathon from now on.

Entry fees for the 26.2-mile race in November are rising from $59 to $66 due to increased operating expenses.

Members of the New York Road Runners, which organizes the marathon, will find their entry fees climbing from $156 to $216. Other U.S. residents will pay $255, up from $196. And international runners will find their fees leaping from $281 to $347.

The New York Road Runners said the hikes are needed to cover the escalating costs associated with event staging, labor, gas, insurance, bridge tolls and "the services of NYC agencies" in order for the organization to "maintain our world-class standards in safety and quality."

The uptick also reflects the costs of providing medical care to runners and new fees instituted by the NYPD for services such as traffic and crowd control, to help the department offset the rising costs of police manpower, said a Road Runners spokesperson.

About 60,000 people were accepted to run last year, but for various reasons, only 47,763 people started the race and a record 46,795 runners finished.
