Figueroa-Levin: This comptroller's race puts emphasis on 'troll'
When I learned that Kristin Davis, aka the Manhattan Madam, was running for comptroller, I was suffering from political burnout.
I've had volunteers from all the major candidates and even a judge knock on my door when hitting people up for signatures. Normally, I try to follow elections, but I've had it up to here with the bickering men (and the woman who did nothing to stop the closure of St. Vincent's Hospital).
The one thing I was looking forward to this whole campaign season was a debate between former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and that Manhattan Madam. Holy Awkwardness, Batman! There's no actual proof (public, anyway) that Davis was the person who provided Client 9 with his . . . service providers . . . and Spitzer himself has denied that he used her. But I don't care. I'm going to clap my hands, yell "I believe in fairies" Tinkerbell-style, and walk around with a smirk on my face until the race is over.
I hate that we live in a city where prostitution is illegal and that the women who work in the industry go to jail -- and endure abuse because they're afraid of jail -- while the rich guys who (illegally) patronize them go free and run for comptroller.
Spitzer puts the "troll" in comptroller.
The comptroller's job is to keep on top of the finances of city agencies, and deal with contracts and other money stuff. Davis spent her career pretty much doing the same thing. Just with prostitutes.
But then the Manhattan Madam got arrested, charged with being the Manhattan Drug Dealer. I know libertarians -- Davis' party on the ballot -- want to do away with drug laws, but couldn't she wait until said laws were repealed before selling pills to FBI informants? Davis is out on bail, but there are calls for her to pull out of the race.
Madam Davis: Please don't withdraw. In a perfect world, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer would win the Democratic primary for comptroller, but right now Client 9 is ahead in the polls.
Stay in the race, fight the good fight, and don't let your supposed former client skate by with his white male privilege unchecked.
And send some pills to Carlos Danger. He needs some.
