Fire at Top of the Rock observation deck leaves 6 with minor burns

The Top of the Rock, the observation deck of Rockefeller Center, was evacuated Sunday evening as more than 60 firefighters responded to a fire caused by a camera.

Five adults and one child sustained "minor burns" from the fire that broke out about 7:43 p.m., New York City Fire Department spokesman Khalid Baylor said.

Baylor said the injuries were not life-threatening and all the adults refused further medical treatment, but the child was transported to NewYork Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities are not classifying the incident as "suspicious," Baylor said. He could not specify what type of camera sparked the blaze.

In a video from the scene posted online, white smoke could be seen coming from the roof of Rockefeller Center.

"It's under investigation, but it's not deemed suspicious," Baylor said.

A dozen FDNY units were called to the scene, bringing the fire "under control" by 8:36 p.m., Baylor said.
