Fire in B'klyn subway tunnel causes problems for evening commute

A fire in a subway tunnel in Brooklyn caused havoc for straphangers during last night's rush hour.
Burning cables in a manhole just north of the DeKalb Avenue station canceled and delayed service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, MTA and FDNY officials said. About 60 firefighters fought the 2-alarm blaze, which broke out just before 4 p.m. and took more than two hours to get under control.
N/Q/R and B/D trains between Manhattan and Brooklyn were suspended, and F trains were rerouted along the G line.
At press time, the MTA said its officials had not yet been able to get to the tunnel to assess the damage at the station. A spokesman said it was too soon to tell how today's morning rush hour would be impacted.
The MTA suggested riders take the No. 2/3 or 4/5 into Brooklyn from Manhattan, or the G from Queens while service was snarled.
