Five arrested after Brooklyn bar brawl
Five people were arrested after a Brooklyn bar brawl early Saturday that began with what law enforcement sources called an unprovoked attack on an off-duty police officer.
Staten Islander John Decarlo, 22, of Staten Island, was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing in the fight outside The Kettle Bar in Bay Ridge. Four others who were arrested had not been charged late Saturday.
An off-duty city firefighter and a Port Authority police officer who came to the aid of the police officer were injured in the fight, police sources said. They were treated at Lutheran Medical Center and released.
Police sources said a knife was recovered at the scene, and another knife was found inside the bar.
The violence broke out shortly after 3 a.m., sources said.
The off-duty police officer was hanging out with a friend and two women at the bar when Decarlo walked up and punched him in the face, they said.
Then, the off-duty Port Authority cop who was at the watering hole with his buddy, the firefighter, jumped to help the police officer and was punched in the face.
Bouncers pushed the growing melee outside, where it continued. The firefighter tried to break up the fight but was slashed in the arm, police sources said.
Police made the arrests after responding to a 911 call.
