G train taking a hit before service cuts roll out

Doomsday has come early for the G train.

To save $1.5 million a year, the MTA is ending the line at Court Square in Long Island City as part of a package of service cuts slated to begin June 27. But surprise —that change is now coming this Monday as the G will no longer making 13 Queens stops because of repairs, amNewYork has learned.

“I guess they couldn’t wait with the bad news,” said Gene Russianoff, of the Straphangers Campaign.

The G runs out to Forest Hills on weeknights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and weekends when there’s no track work. The line will cease running the full length on April 19 at 11 p.m., resulting in longer commutes for 201,000 evening and weekend riders.

“Obviously moving up the date of execution is a very unpleasant turn of events,” Russianoff said.

NYC Transit has been doing extensive work on the line, and it only ran all the way out to Queens three weekends last year, spokesman Charles Seaton said.

“This is maintenance and it’s not unusual,” Seaton said about the cut. “(The service change) will be announced on the Web, posted on the stations and posted on the cars.”

Even though the G won’t run on the tracks that are being repaired, the E, F, R and new M line will still be using them.

Later this year, the G will be suspended entirely on weekends for a month in the spring and another month in the fall, with riders forced to take shuttle buses, according to Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Brooklyn).

“The poor G. We are trying to improve that situation,” said Amy Cleary, a spokeswoman for Lentol, who is pushing for more reliable shuttle bus service.
