Galliano to stand trial for alleged racist remarks

Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano will stand trial for the alleged anti-Semitic rant in a Paris cafe that cost him his job, French officials said yesterday hours after he apologized and reportedly checked into alcohol rehab.
Galliano, 50, could go on trial by June, and face up to six months behind bars and $31,000 in fines, the New York Times reported. In France, it's illegal to spread racial hatred.
The designer was fired from couture house Christian Dior on Tuesday after he was seen on video insulting café patrons with anti-Semitic remarks. “I love Hitler,” he slurred.
"Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society," he said yesterday. "I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offence."
He added that he was assaulted at the café and that he has "commenced proceedings for defamation and the threats made against me."
