Geno Smith to start vs. Giants

The best part of preseason football for fans in the five boroughs comes Saturday, when the Giants and Jets have their annual meeting at MetLife Stadium. While there’s at least a little pride on the line, at the end of the day these two teams are more concerned with keeping players healthy and combing through their rosters before Week 1 than winning an exhibition game. Here’s a look at two goals each team should have in mind.

Jets

See what Smith can do
Rex Ryan is giving rookie Geno Smith his first preseason start. He has yet to truly distance himself from incumbent Mark Sanchez, and his chances of starting the opener against Tampa Bay likely hinge on his performance Saturday.

Who’s he throwing to?
Regardless of who wins the starting QB job, the Jets receiver combos remain up in the air. Jeremy Kerley is a sure bet, but Santonio Holmes is no closer to a return from last year’s injury. Stephen Hill, Clyde Gates and Mohamed Massaquoi will look to shine.

Giants

Sorting out the O-line
Injuries to David Baas and David Diehl have left the Giants without two projected starters. First-round pick Justin Pugh stepping in is a no-brainer, but Jim Cordle’s spot as fill-in starter is tenuous for the time being.

Thomas returns
It’s been two years since defensive back Terrell Thomas appeared during a game — a preseason game — due to injury. If he hopes to play in his first regular season game since Jan. 2, 2011, he’ll need to play well and stay intact this weekend.
