Giants open preseason Saturday vs. Steelers
After missing the playoffs for the third time in four seasons a year ago, the Giants are playing for redemption in 2013. But it’s not going to come in Saturday night’s preseason bout with the Steelers.
Win or lose, the team still has a long way to go if it wants to reclaim its spot atop the NFC East in 2013. However, we will get to see several storylines begin to play out on the field.
Most notably, veterans Corey Webster and David Diehl enter their contract years in hopes of keeping a starting job. The starters will only play a few series Saturday, but it will be our first glimpse at how some of last season’s biggest disappointments have improved during the offseason. Another vet with something to prove, Justin Tuck, may not be healthy enough to play this weekend.
On offense, wideout Jerrel Jernigan will have an opportunity to prove he belongs on the field with the likes of Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. The former third-round pick sits behind Ramses Barden on the depth chart and is in danger of losing his roster spot.
Along the O-line, the team will likely give James Brewer the majority of snaps at right tackle. With Diehl in decline and the inexperienced Justin Pugh vying for a starting job, Brewer remains a darkhorse candidate to earn a starting role in 2013. In two seasons with the Giants, Brewer has yet to play a snap. If he doesn’t progress during camp, he may find himself riding the pine this fall.
