'Glee' may not give reason for Cory Monteith's character's death
The late Cory Monteith's "Glee" character, Finn Hudson, will get a proper farewell on the Fox show -- but fans may not get a proper explanation for Finn's passing.
Following Monteith's July 13 death from a drug overdose, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy said the actor's character will also pass away during the upcoming season, but in a new interview with Deadline.com Thursday, Murphy said the reason behind Finn's death may remain unsaid.
"At one point, we were going to have his character die after an accidental drug overdose -- that was something we had considered," Murphy said. "But we have decided that we're not going to have him pass from that."
Instead, Murphy said, "what we're doing in the episode is we are not telling you yet, or maybe not at all, how that character died, the idea being how somebody died is interesting and maybe morbid."
"But we say very early on in the episode, 'This episode is about a celebration of that character's life,' " Murphy said. "That may be weird for some people, but it felt exploitative to do it any other way."
"Glee" returns to Fox for three weeks starting Sept. 26, and then takes a hiatus so that the cast, including Monteith's girlfriend, Lea Michele, and crew can regroup.
