The real scene-stealer at Monday night’s outdoor movie in Bryant Park turned out to be Glenn Beck, who told his conservative radio audience Tuesday that angry picnickers harassed his family.
Beck, joined by his wife of 11 years, Tania, and one of his three daughters to watch Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps,” recounted the “hostile situation.” It included his wife having wine “kicked intentionally on [her] back” causing their blanket “to get wet,” and then a man yelling, “We hate conservatives here!” to his wife and daughter during a bathroom break.
“These people were some of the most hateful people I have ever seen,” said Beck, adding that he thought people in the crowd wanted to “lynch” him.
“I have a right to watch a movie and enjoy a movie with my family in the park,” he said.
Beck, 47, whose self-titled show on Fox News Channel airs Thursday for the last time, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Joe Carella, a spokesman for Bryant Park, said he heard of no incident report filed regarding Beck.
“They’ve been doing this [event] for 20 years. People are usually civil,” Carella said.
Beck acknowledged the beauty of Bryant Park earlier in Tuesday’s radio broadcast, although it may not be friendly territory for the conspiratorial conservative: The park has been described on his show as a “liberal enclave of Manhattan.”
