Google donates space in NY headquarters to CornellNYC Tech

Google's Chelsea office will soon be home to the next generation of tech gurus.

The Internet giant announced Monday that it allocated 22,000 square feet of its 9th Avenue headquarters to the CornellNYC Tech school.

Google CEO Larry Page, who was joined by the mayor and president of the Ivy League college, said he will be providing the space free of charge until the school sets up its main campus on Roosevelt Island, because he wanted to help foster growth in the science field.

"Simply, there are not enough people doing that," he said.

The space will house office and classroom space that will be used by current Cornell graduate students and faculty in the fall. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the partnership would boost the city's growing new technology industry.

"We envisioned the school having strong ties with our private sector," he said.

The Roosevelt Island space is currently being built and is slated to open in 2015.
