Texas Gov. Rick Perry is expected to announce Saturday that he will run for president in 2012, Politico reported Monday.

The Republican is slated to reveal his intentions during an appearance at a conservative event in Charleston, S.C., said two sources familiar with the plan.
Perry, 61, reportedly has trips planned to the key early-voting states of New Hampshire and Iowa in the following days.

He could shake up the competition for the GOP nomination. A Rasmussen poll released Aug. 1 showed Perry in second place with 18% support, trailing only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (22%).
