Health groups rally to city's legal aid in fight for soda ban

The mayor is getting a healthy dose of support in his legal fight to revive the big-soda ban.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday that more than 30 health groups and hospitals signed an amicus brief in support of the city's appeal of a judge's ruling that nixed the ban.
An amicus brief is a show of support for a position in a lawsuit without joining the case.
The National Association of Local Boards of Health, National Alliance for Hispanic Health and the Harlem Health Promotion Center are just some of the groups that signed the brief.
On March 11, a day before the ban was supposed to go into effect, a State Supreme Court judge sided with the beverage companies and other groups that sued over the proposal.
The city appealed the ruling and arguments are set for June in state appellate court.
