Help abounds for voters on Election Day

Voters encountering problems or needing assistance Tuesday can call the Voters Help Line operated by the New York Public Interest Group and Common Cause at 212-822-0282.

The NYPIRG-Common Cause crew of volunteers works from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. to resolve issues such as names missing from poll registration books, ballot problems and broken voting machines. They can also help voters determine if they're registered, if they're at the right poll and apprise them of the best course of action in the event they are denied the right to vote at a particular location, said Gene Russianoff, senior NYPIRG attorney.

Problems recounted by voters "will be brought right away to the attention of officials at the City Board of Elections," in hopes the problems can be swiftly resolved, said Russianoff.

The Board of Elections will also be operating a help line (1-866-VOTE-NYC or 212-VOTE-NYC) and 311 can also provide assistance.

Multi-lingual assistance is being offered to voters nationwide by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.  The English language number is 1-866-OUR-VOTE and will operate from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.. Spanish speaking voters can call 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and Asian language voters can find assistance in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese and Bengali at 1-888-API-VOTE from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m..
