Hepatitis A discovered in Upper West Side supermarket packaged fruit

The Health Department alerted New Yorkers Thursday to a hepatitis A exposure at an Upper West Side supermarket.

Prepackaged fruit sold between Aug. 9 and 22 at the Westside Market on 2589 Broadway between 97th and 98th streets contained the virus, according to health officials.

The tainted fruit included watermelon; peeled whole pineapples; and shelled and cut coconut.

Customers who ate the items -- whether in store, through catering or delivery -- are urged to get a hepatitis A shot as soon as possible if they did not receive the vaccine.

The city is offering free shots at MS 258, the Community Action School, at 154 West 93rd Street from Friday to Monday.

The Health Department said the store owners are cooperating with the investigation and destroyed all contaminated food items.
