Russell Crowe, of all people, plays the mayor of New York in "Broken City," a new drama about illicit business between Hizzoner and an ex-cop (Mark Wahlberg). With the film opening Friday, amNewYork looks back at some notable on-screen portrayals of NYC mayors.

Bob Hope
'Beau James' (1956)

Hope plays ex-mayor Jimmy Walker in this biopic about his corrupt reign from 1926-32. It seems like weird casting, but Walker was a larger-than-life figure and so was Hope.

Lee Wallace
'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3' (1974)

Wallace's ineffectual mayor has no idea what to do when it comes to resolving the hostage crisis on the No. 6 train at the heart of this fun '70s thriller.

Al Pacino
'City Hall' (1996)

Al Pacino is in classic form as a corrupt mayor in this film about a deputy mayor's investigation of a fatal shootout. It's loosely based on the Donald Manes scandal during the Koch administration.

Barry Bostwick
'Spin City' (1996-2002)

Mayor Randall Wilson on the hit sitcom, which starred Michael J. Fox and then Charlie Sheen, was one of Bostwick's most beloved roles.
