Here's how to pull off the best fashion from 'Pan Am'

When “Mad Men” premiered in 2007, the AMC series became a look book for 1960s glam — notably, the curve-hugging office wear shown off by actress Christina Hendricks and ladylike styles worn by January Jones.
Now, ABC newbie “Pan Am,” set in 1963, showcases a different side of women’s fashion from the era: the stewardess uniform.
A 2011 woman may not go full-out blue, but it’s easy to take elements from the jet-set ensemble and make them modern. With help from the series’ costume designer, Ane Crabtree, we show you how.
1. The pencil skirt is the “Pan Am”-era shape to wear. “It accents all the right places, and it’s a strong piece to use on its own,” Crabtree said. J.Crew No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Vintage Tweed, $148; at J.Crew stores
2. If you’re looking for a full suit, choose one in a modern cut. “Look for a silhouette that gracefully eases into the waist, then curves out around the hips,” Crabtree said. If you’d rather go for outerwear, pick a cape or “unstructured yet architectural coat.” Lisa Perry Flight Coat, price upon request; available for special order at Lisa Perry, 976 Madison Ave., 212-334-1956
3.
The blue flight bag is key to the “Pan Am” look, and it can be modernized with a logo-free aesthetic. “A handbag with a handle that falls over the wrist is so elegant,” Crabtree said. Mark Cross Baker Bridgette Small Satchel, $595; at Saks Fifth Avenue
4.
For the real 1960s Pan Am stewardesses, even undergarments were part of the uniform. Crabtree’s modern-day suggestions: a bullet bra and sleek girdle. What Katie Did Maitresse Bullet Bra, $45; at whatkatiedid.com
5.
A fun take on the classic Pan Am wing pin is a modern piece of jewelry that embodies the in-flight spirit. Pretty brooches also are oh-so-“Pan Am,” Crabtree said. Rachel Rachel Roy Wing Earrings, $34; at Macy’s
