The day before he died, Steve Jobs was apparently still plugging away on Apple’s next gadget.

After the iPhone 4S was announced Oct. 4, Jobs called Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, to go over the details of their next project, according to Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, who was meeting with Cook when Jobs suddenly called him away to rush over to Jobs’ house.

“Masa, sorry, I have to quit out meeting,” Son recalled Cook saying in an interview posted to YouTube. “My boss is calling me.”

What that product was isn’t known, but Apple fans have been eagerly awaiting an iPad 3 or iPhone 5.

Son said he believed Jobs’ devotion to Apple kept him alive longer than expected.

“He was very sick, very ill,” Son said, “but the announcement of their newest product made him live longer.”
