As has been expected for months, Apple Wednesday raised the curtain on two new versions of its iPhone: a higher-end model that succeeds the iPhone 5 and has a fingerprint reader, and a cheaper plastic model aimed at capturing bigger shares of low-end and international markets.

The higher-end phone, the iPhone 5S, is mostly identical to the iPhone 5, except for four new features: a new "gold" color, souped-up insides, a new camera system and, most important, a new fingerprint identification system, which unlocks the phone with the touch of a finger.

Apple's other new phone, the iPhone 5C, comes in five colors and is more or less last year's iPhone 5 in a plastic casing.

Both phones will run the new iOS 7, which Apple showed off Wednesday for the second time, and will be available Sept. 20. (You can preorder the iPhone 5C starting Friday.)

Here's what you need to know:

iPhone 5S

The true successor to the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5S will come in silver, space gray (aka black) and, the new edition, gold.

As with the previous models, it will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage sizes, and will cost $200, $300 and $400, respectively, with a two-year contract.

Apple made a lot of noise about the new camera, which boasts a new dual-flash system that the company says will improve low-light photos. The camera also has a bigger aperture and sensor, which means better photos.

The biggest feature -- and really the phone's only innovation -- is the fingerprint scanner, which lets users unlock their phones without having to enter a passcode. The sensor sits behind the home button and will be able to read multiple prints from multiple fingers in any orientation.

iPhone 5C

Apple's long-rumored "cheap" option, the new plastic phone comes in five colors: blue, yellow, pink, white and green.

It will be available in 16GB and 32GB models for $100 and $200, respectively, on a two-year contract.

The phone's insides are mostly identical to those of last year's iPhone 5.

Apple is also pushing buyers to pick up its silicon rubber cases for $30, which are perforated like Swiss cheese on the back to show off the phone's color.
