While the Mets are drowning themselves swimming in the empty seats at Citi Field, the Yankees look to be as loaded as ever. The Bronx Bombers led the American League with 97 wins last season, and there’s more than one factor to their success.
• Curtis Granderson might not top 40 home runs again like last season, but he’s still one of the premier center fielders in the majors. The Yankees will likely have the best production in the two-hole in the majors while Granderson is there.
• Relievers Rafael Soriano, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera – “So-Ro-Mo,” may be the best late-inning trio in the big leagues. As long as they stay healthy, the Bombers will protect leads better than anyone.
• It’s his time now. Second baseman Robinson Cano emerged from the shadows of his more-hyped teammates to be the Yankees most consistent hitter last season. This year, the 29-year-old is many pundits pick for AL MVP.
• A slimmed-down CC Sabathia looks to sustain his early-season success from last season – when he went 16-5 with a 2.55 ERA through Aug. 1 – throughout the whole season. He’s reportedly made changes to his eating habits to help keep his weight – and ERA – down for the whole season.
