Historic heat wave to break, but just for a day

New Yorkers today will get a welcome reprieve from the historic heat wave that toppled records, but our break will last but a single day.

The high today is expected to be a mild 81 degrees, a far cry from Friday's 104, which was two degrees shy of the Central Park all-time record. Already tomorrow, however, we’ll be roasting again at 91 degrees, and afternoon temps will stay in that range through at least early August.

"[Today] we have much cooler air moving in from Canada," said National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Pollina. "We'll have a warm-up after that, but nothing like what we saw this weekend."

Meanwhile, a fire-damaged Manhattan wastewater treatment plant is no longer pumping raw sewage into the Hudson River, but advisories remain in place against using the Hudson recreationally and swimming in some Staten Island and Brooklyn beaches.

Though it's hard to predict whether the city will see another triple-digit scorcher, there's a 40 percent chance we'll have above-average temps during the next three months, according to the NWS.

Con Edison also broke power-consumption records Friday and Saturday. As of last night, the company was working to restore juice to 7,700 of 84,000 customers left in the dark.
