Huge spike in city drivers busted for texting while driving: Officials

City drivers just won't put down their cellphones.

A year after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law to strengthen penalties against drivers who are busted texting while driving, cops wrote up city drivers more than 11,000 times, up from just under 2,000 in the prior year. Tickets issued in the city accounted for more than half of all violations across the state with the biggest spike in violators in Queens, which saw an increase of more than 800%.

"Using a handheld device while driving puts other motorists in danger and can lead to tragic consequences," Cuomo said in a statement on Thursday. "These tickets should send a resounding message to all drivers: keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel."
