In time for summer, Nathan's reopens after Sandy

Damaged by Superstorm Sandy, Nathan's Famous flagship restaurant in Coney Island will officially reopen Thursday.

The storm put the restaurant out of business for seven months when it filled Nathan's, on the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues, with six feet of water.

"That was the first time an event occurred that caused the closing of Nathan's," Wayne Norbitz, president and COO of Nathan's Famous told amNewYork.

The closure, however, gave Nathan's a chance to renovate and add more space for customers in time for Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer. Nathan's will commemorate the official reopening at 12 p.m. with the cutting of a ribbon of hot dogs.

"Nathan's had to be open for the summer season. We're a big part of Coney island," Norbitz said.
