Increased security visible in some New York City spots
Some increased security was visible among some spots in New York City Tuesday.
In lower Manhattan, security was tight near the federal courthouse on Worth Street where Faisal Shahzad, 30, will appear this week to face terrorism and mass destruction charges.
One woman who tried to exit a taxi in front of the courthouse's main entrance was told by an NYPD officer to "get out of here." The officer told the woman to continue east to the corner and shut the door on her.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Sunday that in the wake of the attempted attack New Yorkers could expect to see more officers in areas like Times Square and on the subway.
"We always have to be vigilant because in the eyes of a terrorist New York is America and they want to kill us," Kelly said Tuesday.
The increased visibility was clear on the city's subway system. Officers searched the bags of riders entering the A train station at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue Tuesday morning.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) renewed his call for increased federal funding for the NYPD's security efforts.
"We need a commitment from the federal government that matches the vigilance and fearlessness of New Yorkers," Schumer said.
More officers than usual were also stationed outside One Police Plaza, the NYPD headquarters blocks from the federal courthouse.
