Injury forces Jets' David Garrard to retire: Reports

The Jets starting quarterback race is already clearing up a bit.
David Garrard, the former Jaguars starter who joined the Jets this offseason, said he will be forced to retire due to injury, according to a tweet by SNY’s Adam Schein.
The tweet read: “Text from Garrard: ‘Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do.”
With the apparent departure of Garrard, that leaves the Jets with four quarterbacks vying for the starting job: Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.
The news should not be a shock to those familiar with Garrard. He has not played a down during the regular season since 2010 as a result of injuries.
According to Tania Ganguli of the Houston Chronicle, Garrard, 35, had told her via text message that he was planning on retiring as a Jaguar.
