Inside peek at: The Emerson

Though it’s been open less than six months, the Emerson — a literary-themed bar in Clinton Hill — has already developed a loyal following.
Décor: The place is woodsy and dark (and we mean dark — on a recent visit, we needed to use our cell phone to read the menu). The back room boasts a pool table and a kind of impromptu gallery.
Vibe: Regulars perch comfortably at the bar. It’s sort of like a hipster version of “Cheers.”
Drinks: There is an inventive cocktail list, which includes concoctions such as the Emerson ($9) — a blend of locally distilled Breuckelen gin, fresh ginger and mint, lime juice and Prosecco. We especially liked the Longfellow ($11) — a mix of cucumber, cilantro, Hornitos tequila and pineapple juice. However, cocktails tend to be a bit small, so bargoers might be better off dropping $6 on a pint of Original Sin Hard Cider or Kelso. The beers get even cheaper during happy hour (daily, 5-7:30 p.m.), when they’re two-for-one.
Food: Patrons can choose among several types of grilled-cheese sandwiches, such as the classic tomato and mozzarella, or the homey combo of cheddar and Bacos. Niman Ranch hotdogs come with a range of toppings, including horseradish and kimchi.
Insider's tip: The bar is definitely the place to sit. The booths tend to be a bit stiff.
