New York's annual digital confab is set to kick off Monday, as Internet Week sweeps through the city, highlighting the Big Apple's leading role in tech and online culture.
The annual weeklong conference, launched in 2008, turns the city into a mecca for the digitally connected, with panels, speeches, demonstrations and more in online business and culture.
Headquartered at the Metropolitan Pavilion at 25 W. 18th St., this year's week is expected to bring some 45,000 Internet professionals and 10,000 attendees, and will feature events ranging from keynote addresses from the likes of New York Times business savant Andrew Ross Sorkin and Founder & CEO of Zuckerberg Media and Editor of Dot Complicated Randi Zuckerberg, to fireside chats with BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti.Rachel Haot, the city's chief digital officer, said the "momentum and growth of Internet Week reflects the growth of the tech industry" in the city.
"This year, we have a lot to point to. We will have our own booth. People who want to learn, launch or grow tech in New York can come there," she said, adding that she'll host a panel discussion with New York tech companies on Wednesday.
"In the beginning, it was more about rallying and crowd sourcing events about the Internet industry in the city," Haot added. "As the tech sector grew in the city, it made sense to have a physical space to convene."
