Jackie Robinson movie '42' tops weekend box office

The Jackie Robinson flick “42” hit it out of the park at the box office this weekend.

The movie — which depicts the legendary story of how Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 — took the No. 1 spot at the box office, raking in $27.3 million in ticket sales. The film, starring Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Dodgers G general manager Branch Rickey, opened Friday.

Coming in second was horror spoof “Scary Movie 5,” co-starring Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen as themselves, with $15.2 million in its first weekend showing. Animated movie “The Croods” took in $13.2 million in its fourth weekend in theaters.
