NYPD: Man shot dead inside Jamaica subway station

A Brooklyn man was fatally shot Monday afternoon inside the Jamaica Center subway station, the NYPD said.

Police responding to a 4:30 p.m. 911 call at the busy transit hub found Marcus Bethea, 24, shot several times in the torso, according to the NYPD. Bethea was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, police said.

A gun was recovered at the scene, according to police. There had been no arrests as of late Monday.

The killing came nearly two weeks after a mass shooting inside a crowded Brooklyn subway car injured 23 people and rattled an already on-edge New York City after months of surging crime. Law enforcement arrested the alleged gunman, Frank James, in Manhattan about 30 hours after the April 12 shooting on federal terrorism charges.

The victim Monday afternoon had been in a dispute with another male just before being shot, said NYPD Transit Chief Jason Wilcox at a news conference inside the station at Parsons Boulevard and Archer Avenue.

"We're trying to determine what initiated this dispute between these two males that led to the fight that led to the shooting,” Wilcox said Monday night.

Police were reviewing surveillance footage at the station for any possible clues, Wilcox said.

The failure of security cameras in the Brooklyn subway shooting is the subject of an investigation announced Monday by Acting Metropolitan Transportation Authority Inspector General Elizabeth Keating.
