Knicks guard Jason Kidd told police he "had a few drinks" and had been "at a club on the South Fork" before his alleged drunken driving accident early Sunday in Water Mill, court records show.
Kidd "smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage, he had slurred speech, (was) very unsteady afoot and had bloodshot, watery and glassy eyes," according to the misdemeanor driving while intoxicated complaint.
Police Chief William Wilson Jr. said Monday that Kidd was charged with driving while intoxicated after he refused a blood test and chemical test after the one-vehicle accident at 2:42 a.m. near the intersection of Cobb Road and Little Cobb Road.
Kidd's attorney, Edward Burke Jr., of Sag Harbor, issued a statement early Monday: "Jason was involved in a single vehicle accident on his way back home from a charity function (Saturday) night ... Jason has pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge and awaits further court proceedings."
According to the police report, Kidd was driving a 2010 Cadillac Escalade when it left the road and traveled about 25 feet into a wooded area, leveling a telephone pole in the process.
Police said wires from the downed pole had to be deactivated before he got out of the vehicle on his own. Kidd was transported to Southampton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
It was at the hospital where he refused a blood test, Wilson told Newsday on Monday.
