With every passing day, Derek Jeter’s expected return only gets further away.
The Yankees are now hoping to have their starting shortstop back on the field by May 1, according to CBSSports.com and WFAN’s Jon Heyman.

After breaking his ankle during the ALCS in October, Jeter had always maintained that his goal was to be back on the field for Opening Day. But near the end of spring training, it became clear the future Hall of Famer was not healthy enough to make the self-imposed deadline.

Jeter can come off the disabled list Saturday, but he has virtually no chance of doing so yet. He has been working out at the team’s minor league complex this week, but hasn’t done much more than play long toss.

According to Newsday, a club insider said that Jeter is “not even where he was at Jan. 28.”
