Jets unlikely to claim Randy Moss off waivers from Minnesota

The debate started right after the Vikings waived troubled standout wide receiver Randy Moss after a 26-day stay under Minnesota coach Brad Childress.

Should the Jets make a play for him?

After watching Jerricho Cotchery, Santonio Holmes and running back Shonn Greene outright drop three passes during last week’s 9-0 loss to the Packers — with two other passes wrestled out of Cotchery’s and Dustin Keller’s arms for interceptions — the obvious answer might have been a resounding yes.

But it is unlikely the Jets (5-2) will take a shot at a player with so many personal issues, if Moss even gets to the Jets’ 30th spot on the waiver list by today’s 4 p.m. claiming deadline.

Darrelle Revis called him “a slouch” in January for Moss’ penchant for giving up during games. And Moss, as dynamic as he can be, would only add to a receiver corps that already must cope with the off-field issues of Braylon Edwards and Holmes, as well as cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

As unlikely as it is the Jets will go after Moss, it seems just as unlikely the otherwise reliable receivers will have a similar case of the drops when the Jets visit the Detroit Lions (2-5) on Sunday (1 p.m., CBS).

“Everything that happened was inexcusable,” Holmes said of last week’s effort. “We’ll get it corrected and get ready to roll next week.”
