JFK normal after unfounded gunfire reports, officials say
Operations were back to normal Monday morning at two terminals at Kennedy Airport that were evacuated Sunday night after reports of gunfire that turned out to be unfounded, officials said.
“Everything is normal now,” Joseph Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said Monday at about 10 a.m.
Reports of gunfire in Terminal 8 first came in at 9:34 p.m. Sunday, and Port Authority police evacuated the building.
About 45 minutes later, a second report of gunfire came in, this time from Terminal 1, officials said, leading police to evacuate that building and shut it down.
But a search showed no evidence of gunfire; police found no weapons, spent rounds or live rounds, Pentangelo said. No one was injured or arrested, and there was no property damage.
The incident did not appear to be a hoax, but started when someone thought they heard gunfire and started running, the spokesman said. Others joined in, fueled in part by social media as people started texting about shots fired, he said.
The evacuations delayed flights amid the crush of the mid-August vacation season.
