The Yankees anemic offensive output could finally be getting a much-needed boost, as the Phillies have expressed interest in reliever Joba Chamberlain and could be willing to ship utility infielder Michael Young and catcher Carlos Ruiz to the Bombers, according to the New York Daily News.

General manager Brian Cashman has expressed mild interest in the deal, according to the News, but with the July 31 trade deadline approaching, he may have no choice but to pursue an upgrade to the team’s lineup.

Young, who was hitting .288 entering last night’s games, could serve as the team’s third baseman until Alex Rodriguez comes off the disabled list. When Rodriguez returns, Young’s would likely platoon with Lyle Overbay at first base.

Ruiz is hitting .266 this season and has no home runs, but he hit .325 last season and would be an instant upgrade over Chris Stewart (.253 BA) and Austin Romine (.132 BA).
