Fourth of July: Macy’s fireworks display returning to East River

The 40th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display will dazzle the skies over the East River again this year, the company and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office announced Friday.
This year’s fireworks display will commemorate the nation’s 240th birthday.
“With the fireworks lighting up the East River for the third year in a row, millions of New Yorkers will again be able to take part in Macy’s electrifying July Fourth display,” de Blasio said in a statement. “The fireworks will ignite the sky – and the local economy – from Queens to Brooklyn to Manhattan, as we celebrate the nation’s 240th birthday.”
The 25-minute spectacle will feature more than 52,000 shells timed to a musical score.
As in years past, Macy’s will fire off fireworks from four barges positioned between 23rd and 37th streets and one double barge located near the Brooklyn Bridge, according to Macy’s.
The fireworks are set to begin at 9:25 p.m. on Monday, July 4.
