Jury selection for the trial of veteran Democratic state Sen. John Sampson on corruption charges began Monday in federal court in Brooklyn.

Sampson, 47, who has represented Canarsie since 1996, faces charges that he embezzled money while serving as a court-appointed referee in foreclosure sales, hid his ownership interest in a state-licensed liquor store and tried to obstruct the government investigation.

A former Senate majority leader, Sampson was charged in 2013. U.S. District Judge Dora Irizarry said opening statements and testimony in the case will begin Wednesday, and the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
