Katie Couric out from 'Evening News,' future still unclear

"Today" is in Katie Couric's past and her present with "The CBS Evening News" will end in June, but the multimillion-dollar question is what her tomorrows will bring.

She confirmed to "People" yesterday that she’d be done when her contract with CBS ends after an at-times awkward five years, and said she'll be "looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling."

Whether that means a syndicated talk show, possibly under the tutelage of her old NBC boss Jeff Zucker, was not immediately clear but seemed likely. Reports yesterday said ABC was seriously vying for her services.

ABC seems a logical place for her to land because the network's owned-and-operated stations are losing "The Oprah Winfrey Show," a prominent gap in afternoon schedules that Couric could have the star power to fill.

What appears clear is that veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley will replace her at the anchor desk where Dan Rather and before him Walter Cronkite toiled for decades before Couric became the first woman to solo anchor a network evening newscast.

Her tenure at CBS was fraught from the start, with internal resentment of her reported $15 million a year salary and her chronic inability to pull CBS out of third place in the evening news race.

CBS only offered a cryptic statement yesterday: "There's a lot to be proud of during Katie Couric's time at Evening News. CBS News, like Katie herself, is looking forward to the next chapter."
