A fetus was found Tuesday morning in the bathroom toilet of an American Airlines jet at LaGuardia Airport, the airline and New York City medical examiner said.

A cleaning crew made the discovery on an Airbus A321 that arrived Monday night from Charlotte, North Carolina, the airline said. Flight 1942 departed from Charlotte Douglas International Airport shortly after 9 p.m. and arrived at LaGuardia about 90 minutes later, according to FlightAware.com, a website that tracks flights worldwide.

“As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation,” the airline said in a statement.

The medical examiner will determine how the fetus died and the Queens district attorney’s office is investigating the matter.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on the flight to New York, but the airliner can carry 187 passengers, according to the airline.
