A New York City congressman has proposed legislation that would make the Sept. 11 cross-shaped steel beam a national monument.
The New York Post reports that Rep. Michael Grimm of Staten Island said he was pushing for protective status for the 20-foot steel cross that was found amid the ruins of the World Trade Center site.
He said the proposed legislation was in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Atheists. The group argues that a “Christian icon” should not be included in the 9/11 memorial museum, slated to open next year.
Gimm called the group’s opposition reprehensible. He said the cross was a symbol of hope and freedom when New Yorkers were coping with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.
