Lex. Ave. subway service restored after derailment traps 100

Subway service on the Lexington line is back to normal after a derailment trapped 100 straphangers early Wednesday and fumbled morning rush hour service.

The wheels of a northbound No. 6 train lifted off the track just after 4 a.m. Wednesday between 116th St. and 125th St. as workers were maintaining the track, the MTA said. No one was injured.

While the MTA evacuated the majority of the passengers through a rescue train, the FDNY evacuated at least 16 people as well. They were all taken back to the 116th station by 5 a.m., according to the FDNY.

Because of the derailment, uptown No. 6 trains were running express between Grand Central and 125th St. and the No. 5 train was running along the No. 2 line. Service was restored with “some residual delays” by 1 p.m., the MTA said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
