Liu at risk of losing millions in campaign funds

Supporters of City Comptroller John Liu are planning a rally at the Campaign Finance Board's lower Manhattan headquarters Monday to protest a vote that would deny his mayoral campaign more than $3 million in public matching funds.
The campaign said CFB staff had recommended to the board that Liu should not get funding under the city's campaign finance program, in which contributions from residents of up to $175 get matched 6 to 1. The board is meeting at 10 a.m. to authorize the first round of public matching funds for the Sept. 10 primary.
"We hope the board does the right thing -- not only for this campaign, but for the thousands of New Yorkers who deserve to have their political contributions matched, as they expected," said Bill Lynch, Liu's campaign manager.
A Campaign Finance Board spokesman said it could not comment about specific payments until it acts.
