Long Beach lands first-ever pro surf event
Surf’s up this summer on Long Island. Way up.
The Association of Surfing Professionals announced yesterday that the $1 million Quiksilver Pro New York will be staged in Long Beach this summer, marking the first-ever East Coast event for the ASP World Tour.
“It means a lot, honestly,” Vic Alarcon, manager of Unsound Surf in Long Beach, said of the Sept. 4-15 event. “That’s pretty much the time that the waves get really good around here, from August to November.”
"People are always just thinking that California has better waves," said Alarcon, whose shop is short walk from the jetty where the event will be held this summer. "Just having them come up to New York is just is just awesome. ... Business-wise, it's going to be amazing."
