Macy's in Herald Square evacuated after fire
Macy's flagship store in Manhattan's Herald Square was partially evacuated after a fire broke out in the sub-basement of the building, fire officials said.
Firefighter John Vaeth says the blaze was called in about 11:43 a.m. yesterday and was under control about three hours later. The cause of the fire was not known.
One firefighter was treated for a minor injury, he said.
Macy's officials couldn't immediately be reached by phone for comment.
A fire in an escalator between the third and fourth floor at the Herald Square store on Dec. 20 led to the evacuation of hundreds of holiday shoppers.
Macy's opened on 34th Street in 1902. The store has 1.1 million square feet of selling space and is the city's third-largest tourist attraction.
