A Connecticut man was arrested on weapons charges Monday after the Transportation Security Administration said he tried to take a handgun through a security checkpoint at Kennedy Airport, officials said.

The TSA did not say what airline or what terminal building was involved and did not release the identity of the person arrested, other than to say he was from New Canaan.

The passenger involved was headed to Aruba, the TSA said, and was stopped after a TSA officer staffing a checkpoint X-ray machine spotted the gun inside a gun case "tucked in the traveler's carry-on bag."

The man told officials he "forgot" he had the .22-caliber pistol with him in his luggage.

The TSA said that once the agent discovered the weapon, the Port Authority Police were notified -- and arrested the man on a state weapons charge. The gun was confiscated, as well, the TSA said.
