Man falls from Empire State Building observation deck onto next floor down
An Argentinian tourist fell from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building Wednesday night, only to be stopped one floor down.
Nathaniel Fimone, 33, climbed a security fence and jumped from the Empire State Building’s observation deck at approximately 11:30 p.m. But instead of falling 86 stories, he landed on a catwalk between the 86th and 85th floors, according to the New York Daily News.
Tourists witnessed Fimone swinging his legs off the catwalk as though he meant to jump again.
“He was in his own world, like he was lost,” Luis Ariel Jofre, another Argentinian tourist told the Daily News. “He was calm looking down, like it was nothing, but it was 80 stories high.”
Security guards convinced Fimone not to attempt a second jump and to re-enter the building through a window. Fimone was sent to Bellevue Hospital for cut hands and a broken ankle. FDNY officials reportedly labeled him emotionally disturbed, although they have not determined whether or not his fall was intentional.
Fimone faces charges of reckless endangerment, trespassing and disorderly conduct.
