Straphangers saved the life of a man in a wheelchair Tuesday evening when he rolled onto the subway tracks at the Lexington Avenue and 59th Street station, the MTA said.

Riders waiting on the platform for a southbound No. 4 train were able to flag down the conductor, who slammed the emergency brake before the train could hit the fallen man, according to an MTA spokeswoman.

With the tracks still powered, passengers jumped into the roadbed to bring the man back to the platform. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center for lacerations to his head, an FDNY spokesman said.
